  CPCS

CPCS is the largest and most highly recognised card scheme for the plant industry, more than 150,000 individuals carry the card and it is required to be able to operate most categories of plant on UKCG (UK Contractors Group), NCF (National Contractors Federation) and MHBG (Major Home Builders Group) sites.

The CPCS Technical Test consists of 2 parts, a theory test that is carried out verbally and a practical test. These can be completed by anyone who has a current (within 2 years) touch screen Health and Safety test. On successful completion of the test the operator will be issued the CPCS red trained operators card.

Courses are available for operators with limited or no experience to train them to the required standard to pass the CPCS Technical Test. They vary from a 3 day foundation course on a forward tip dumper, to a 10 day 360 excavator. A worker with some experience would be able to be profiled and undertake a shorter training course if this was demonstrated by their ability.

NVQ

The NVQ is required as part of both the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) and the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) NVQs focus on practical skills and knowledge - meaning the candidate is assessed on what they can do on the job, rather than what they can write in an exam.
The candidate is profiled to match their knowledge, skill and experience against the NVQ national standards and an action plan is agreed.
The NVQ process requires a commitment by the candidate to gather the evidence required, and the assessor and employer to support and assist in this process.

In House Training and Assessment

For certain companies an In-House option for training and assessment could be the best option. If they control their own work area, carry out different tasks with the equipment or use the equipment in a limited role, a training needs analysis, followed by the development and delivery of the programme, completed with assessment and evaluation could be appropriate.

This route is not suitable in most cases for individuals. It also needs confirming prior to starting that the Health and Safety department and Insurance are not looking for National certification.

In House Courses Available

Each successful candidate that completes an in house course will receive a certificate and report (where appropriate). Also available are photo ID cards which display the details of all in house courses completed by the candidate.

These can be very useful for the individual on site for quick reference.
